On Saturday, September 30th, Holland
America docked at Juneau, the capitol of
Alaska and we went on a tour to Mendenhall Glacier ($45) in the morning. This was about a 20 minute drive from the Ship.
The bus driver took us out, and was going to pick us up 2 1/2 hours later. The Visitors Centre was quite big, with a small movie theatre, a museum with some fresh 200 year old ice, and a gift shop. However, because of the bears, they do not have a restaurant.
We did not wait for our bus to pick us up - there
was another bus from the Ship, and we got that one after about 2 hours there.
Back in Juneau, we went for lunch at the Red Dog Saloon - there was sawdust on the floor. We ordered fish and chips and a beer ($17) - instead of French fries, there were potato chips - but a good lunch in an old tourist spot.
For dinner, I had crab and shrimp crostini, cheddar cheese soup, beef tenderloin with potato and leeks and peach crisp. After dinner, we went to the theatre for a musical performance.
This Ship, the Volendam, has a very impressive Movie room, which is also used by America Test kitchen for cooking lessons.
